THIBODAUX, La. – After losing three consecutive games for the first time in nearly a year, the Nicholls State University women's soccer team will look to get back on track against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Houston Baptist on the road in Texas.
The Colonels (2-6-1, 0-3 SLC) have been riddled with injuries all season, most notably senior
Jess Coates, who has been sidelined from an injury suffered in practice. Nicholls has had an unheard of number of head injuries this year and even went a game without Head Coach
Dylan Harrison. Despite countless obstacles, the Colonels continue to fight rather than lean on any excuses, no matter how valid.
The Islanders (0-7-2, 0-2-1 SLC) have had a terrible start to their 2015 campaign, going without a win through nine straight matches, but earned a tie against a tough Southland Conference opponent, Abilene Christian.
The Huskies (4-3-1, 2-1 SLC) opened league-play with consecutive victories against Incarnate Word and Sam Houston, but are coming off of a 2-1 loss at the hands of Stephen F. Austin.
Spencer Valdespino leads Nicholls into the weekend with a team-high five goals. Five different players have recorded two assists for the evenly balanced Colonels.
Katherine Kelly leads the defensive efforts and
Amanda Boylson has 32 saves with 12 goals allowed this season.
Yvette Franco paces Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with two goals on the year. Goalkeeper Megan Delaney has recorded 62 saves and surrendered 20 goals through nine games.
Sabriah Spencer (three goals) and Allison Abendschein (two goals and two assists) spearhead the Houston Baptist offense. In the net, Katie Turner and Alanis Guevara have combined for 30 saves and 10 goals allowed.
Following this weekend's action, Nicholls will return to Thibodaux and face off with McNeese State on Friday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m.
