HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Nicholls State University men's golfer
Jack Lee secured his 10th career top-10 finish as the senior shot an impressive 67 in the final round of the Sam Hall Intercollegiate, taking third place Tuesday at the Hattiesburg Country Club.
Lee entered the final round in 15th place out of a total of 78 golfers but skyrocketed up the leaderboard with six birdies. Teeing off at 10, he birdied three consecutive holes – 11-13 – and added another one on 17 as he finished the back at 3-under. He bogeyed hole 3 after the turn before sinking birdies on 4 and 5 to finish with a 4-under 209 for the tournament. Lee trailed Mercer's Tyler Copp by a stroke for second, and Southern Miss' Matt Lorenz won with an 8-under 205.
For the team score, Nicholls remained in 11th place despite a team-low 285 for the three rounds, finishing ahead of Southeastern Louisiana and New Orleans. The Colonels (870) were edged by Winthrop by a stroke and finished two strokes behind Stephen F. Austin and Samford for eighth place. At 18-over for the event, it was the lowest to-par score since Feb. 28, 2017, in the Colin Montgomerie Invitational (+18).
"I'm proud of the team effort," said
James Schilling, Nicholls head golf coach. "We met and I challenged our players to take a simple approach to the beginning of our round. We started better and held it together to shoot our tournament-low round."
Playing for the first time in team competition, sophomore
Zachary Barrios tied for 28th following an even 71 in the final round for a 217. He had a pair of birdies in both front and back 9s, climbing nine spots on the leaderboard.
Baker Stevenson shot a 72 and finished at 218, while
Connor Campbell (226) and
Loic Maigret (232) shot 75 and 76, respectively.
Host Southern Miss claimed the tournament championship at 9-under 843. Mercer (-5) and Missouri State (-1) also shot below par.
