SHREVEPORT, La. - After sliding down the team leaderboard in Sunday's final round of the David Toms Intercollegiate, the Nicholls State University men's golf team pieced together a solid showing to climb back to eighth place and finish in front of the four Southland Conference schools.
For the three rounds at the Southern Trace Country Club, Nicholls shot a 2-over 866 to best New Orleans by four strokes. The other conference members in the 12-team event were Central Arkansas (874), McNeese (883), and Southeastern Louisiana (908).
"We're still a very young team but it was a good showing," Nicholls head coach
James Schilling said. "We finished ahead of the other Southland teams so that was one of our goals. As a team, we had around 14 birdies in the final nine holes and that showed me two things - the team doesn't quit, and that we have the ability to catch back up, which is something we've maybe lacked a little in the previous years with the entire team."
The Colonels had moved down to 10th around the midway point of Sunday's round before catching fire.
Warut Wongrungroj, who was the top finisher for Nicholls, shot a 4-under in his final nine holes and ended with a 2-under for the event to tie for 20th.
"It was a nice bounce-back for Warat. He was 5-over at one point and made it back to even," Coach Schilling said.
Nils Dobrunz was close behind, tying for 24th at 216.
Connor Campbell shot the lowest round on Sunday, a 1-under 71, to card a 217 and
Ben Baker totaled a 219. Baker had the best round of any Colonel for the weekend with a 3-under 69 in Saturday's second round.
Ryan O'Neil competed as an individual and shot a 232.
Host LSU won the tournament by a wide margin, finishing ahead of Memphis 801-838. The Tigers had four of the top five finishers, including co-medalists Trey Winstead and Hayden White (199).
