MATHEWS, La. – Led by underclassmen
Ben Baker and
Connor Campbell, the Nicholls State University men's golf team stayed in seventh place with a 300 in Tuesday's final round of the LaTour Intercollegiate, held at the LaTour Golf Club in Mathews.
The Colonels totaled a 903 in the two-day tournament after shooting 307 and 296 on Monday. The course played a little more difficult than normal with howling winds and rain hampering each round. UTRGV repeated as champion with an overall score of 5-over 869.
Playing in his third event for the Red and Gray, Baker was the most consistent for head coach
James Schillings' squad, carding a 73 and 75 Monday, and a 2-over 74 on Tuesday for a 222. His four birdies in the round helped him to even heading into his final hole, but a double bogey put him over for the day as he tied for 13th.
Campbell got hot as the rain came down harder, sinking birdies on holes 3, 4, and 5. He ended the round with a 3-over 75 and tied for 18th.
Senior
Jack Lee had an 81 on Tuesday, finishing third on the team with a 231.
Baker Stevenson was a stroke behind after firing a 76, and
Loic Maigret totaled a 233 after carding a 3-over.
Freshman
Warut Wongrungroj led the Colonel individual players with a 226 following a 77 in the final round, while
Liam Bryden had a 75 for a three-round score of 232.
Zachary Barrios shot an 81, ending the event with a 240.
For the individual honors, UIW's John Hill and UTRGV's Tennoshin Ogawa were co-medalists after finishing at 213. Hill shot a 69 in the final round and had a rare hole-in-one on No. 17.
