MATHEWS, La. - The Nicholls State University men's golf team had five rounds under 70 in the opening day of the LaTour Intercollegiate, including two each by
Warut Wongrungroj and
Nils Dobrunz, as the Colonels shot a 20-under 556 Monday at the LaTour Golf Club.
Wongrungroj set a new personal best with his 5-under 67 in the opening round and followed with a 68, placing him in fourth place and just a stroke back from tying for first. Dobrunz carded the best round of his young career with a 68 and duplicated the effort in the second.
The final sub 70 was a 3-under by
Ben Baker. His second-round 73 placed him at 23rd heading into Tuesday's final round.
Connor Campbell finished a stroke behind at 71-72--143 and
Ryan O'Neil shot a 71-75--146. Nicholls also had two golfers compete as individuals -
Mickael Najmark (150) and
Victor Le Gal (155).
Nicholls opened the tournament with a 275, which is also a record low for the program. The Colonels added six strokes in the second round and trail leader Southern Miss (550) by the difference. Jacksonville State and Abilene Christian are tied for second at 551.
The Colonels had the third-most birdies on the day, paced by Dobrunz with 12 and Wongrungroj with 10. Najmark had the only eagle for Nicholls, tallying a 3 on Hole 2.

Nicholls will wrap up the LaTour Intercollegiate Tuesday morning with the final 18 holes. The shotgun start is scheduled for 8 a.m.
