Colonels post solid effort in cold conditions at LaTour

MATHEWS, La. - The Nicholls State University men's golf team battled the cold temperature and windy conditions in Saturday's opening round of the LaTour Intercollegiate to fire a 303, tying for fifth out of 13 teams at the LaTour Golf Club.

The Colonels wrap up the event Sunday with 18 holes, starting at 9 a.m. Normally a 54-hole tournament, weather conditions altered the schedule once again as Monday's action has been canceled.

Nicholls finds itself in the middle of a logjam in the standings as teams ranked third through 10th are separated by only seven strokes. The Colonels are tied with Missouri State, Samford, and HBU, and trail Eastern Kentucky (302) and UTRGV (300) for third and second. Jacksonville State is second at 293 while late addition Louisiana Tech heads the field after carding an even 288.

For the player leaderboard, Ryan O'Neil, Martin Trochu and Victor Le Gal all shot 3-over to tie for 17th in the standings. Birdies were tough to come by due to the conditions as the Colonels totaled nine between the five golfers in team play. O'Neil had a strong finish to his day, going red on 15 and 16 before recording pars on his final two holes.

Jaime Suarez Morales shot a 78 in his Colonel debut while Liam Bryden finished with an 82.

Mickael Najmark had three birdies as an individual but ended his day with a 7-over 79. Jonathan Kotzen, also playing in his first event as a Colonel, finished with a 6-over 78.

LA Tech's Sam Murphy paces the leaderboard after shooting a 3-under 69. He had five birdies and only two bogeys in the round.
