Mizzou takes opener over Colonels, 12-1

THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University baseball team opened its 2022 campaign with a 12-1 seven-inning loss against Missouri Friday night on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.

Mizzou built an 11-0 lead through three and a half innings before Jaden Collura singled up the middle in the fourth for the Colonels' lone run of the night.

The Tigers outhit Nicholls, 14-6, and belted three home runs. A 2-run shot by Luke Mann in the second inning plated the first two runs of the night. Trevor Austin and Ty Wilmsmeyer each homered in six-run fourth that broke the game open.

Along with Collura, Wes Toups led the offense with a base hit and a walk. Jayden Kay doubled over the right field wall to lead off the third but was stranded on base.

Nico Saltaformaggio took the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits and five walks in 3.0 innings of work. For the last four innings of the game, six different Colonels saw the mound. Nick Hill closed out the game with a three-up, three-down inning.

Wilmsmeyer led the Mizzou offense with three hits and three RBIs, while Austin added two hits - both going for extra bases. The Tiger offense pounded out four doubles to go along with its three long balls.

Spencer Miles earned the win, tossing 4.0 innings with one earned run on four hits. Kyle Potthoff picked up a three-inning save.
