MCKINNEY, Texas - Helped by a team-hight three birdies in the opening day of the Southland Conference Championship, Nicholls State University men's golfer
Ryan O'Neil shot a 2-over 74 to tie for sixth place after Monday's 18 holes at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club.
As a team, Nicholls turned in a 310 for the opening round and is two strokes behind UIW for fifth place. Southeastern led the seven-team field with a 297.
O'Neil's three birdies came in a span of six holes, putting him at even for the round heading into hole No. 14. He followed with four pars before carding a double bogey on 18. He finished three strokes behind three golfers at 1-under for the lead.
Martin Trochu shot a 76 and was one of two Colonels to sink an eagle on Monday. Holding a 3-over on the par 5 seventh, Trochu knocked off two strokes with his eagle. He birdied the next hole before wrapping up the day at 4-over and in a tie for 13th.
Mickael Najmark turned in a 78 and was followed by
Braxton Kuntz (82) and
Liam Bryden (85). Kuntz was the other Colonel to eagle, carding a 2 on Hole No. 6.
