THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team will host a four-game series against UT-Martin on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field on Feb. 20-22.
First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m., Saturday's double header is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. and the series finale on Sunday will begin at 1 p.m. All four contests will be live streamed via ESPN+.
Earlier this week, Nicholls (0-5) dropped their home opener against South Alabama on Tuesday before falling to No. 2 LSU on Wednesday afternoon.
The Colonels have played stout competition thus far as four of their first five games were against nationally ranked teams. The offense is led by
Nico Rijo-Berger who has a .333 batting average as he has four hits including a solo home run that gave the Red & Gray a brief 1-0 lead against LSU. First baseman
Caston Thompson also has four hits this season and one home run as he was responsible for all three runs the Colonels scored in Knoxville.
The Red & Gray starting rotation for the weekend will be
Nuno Parache,
Austin Vargas,
Dawson Richard, and
Haden Luke. Parache recorded four strikeouts in four innings of work in the season opener against Tennessee. Vargas and Richard had one punch out apiece against the Volunteers as they combined for 3.2 innings of work.
UT Martin (2-1) began the season in a three game home series against Butler where they dropped the season opener (10-7) in 10 innings before scoring 24 runs to win games two and three of the series.
The Skyhawks' offense features four players hitting .400 or better with TJ Grines (.571) leading the way with eight hits including two doubles and five RBI. TJ Dunsford (.400) has six hits and a team-high six RBI. Bo Strickland (.556) and Andrew Davis (.417) have five hits apiece. UTM's stating rotation will be Jacob Sitton, Maxwell Schumacher, Cason Sharp, and Dean McCalla.
