THIBODAUX, La. – After winning four consecutive home games, the Nicholls State University baseball team will look to keep its momentum rolling as they begin Southland Conference play by hosting McNeese in a three-game series on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field on Feb. 27- March 1.
The action on Friday and Saturday will begin a 6 p.m. while the series finale on Sunday will start at 2 p.m. Games one and three will be live streamed via ESPN+.
Nicholls (4-6) dropped the first six games with four of them being against nationally ranked teams before finding its rhythm to go on a four-game winning streak. The Colonels won the final three games of a weekend series against UT-Martin and beat Dillard 16-2 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Red & Gray have recorded double figure hits in all of their victories. The offense is led by reigning SLC Hitter of the Week
Caston Thompson who is coming off an incredible week at the plate where he recorded 12 hits including three doubles and two home runs. While batting .462 and slugging .808 he also scored seven times, tallied six RBI and earned three free passes. Thompson leads the Colonels in batting average (.410), hits (16), RBI (10), runs (9), doubles (4), and home runs (3).
Leadoff hitter
Keegan Giger has also sparked the offense as he has 12 hits, 10 RBI, and six runs while batting .293.
Casey Artigues has the third most hits (9) and has scored the second most runs (8) while batting .265.
Greyson Shafer bats .250 and has seven hits including two homers and seven RBI.
For the Colonels' pitching staff that have accumulated 91 strikeouts will have
Nuno Parache,
Austin Vargas and
Haden Luke as the weekend's starting rotation. Parache holds a 4.50 ERA while having 10 strikeouts in 10 innings of work. Vargas has four strikeouts and holds an 8.10 ERA whole Luke has eight strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work.
