THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team complete a six-run comeback to defeat Northwestern State University 9-8 on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field on Saturday night.
After falling behind 7-1, Nicholls scored six runs on five hits across the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game at seven. The Red & Gray scoring explosion started with
Matt Melancon scoring on a
Carter Jenkins single up the middle to make the score 7-2.

Keegan Giger blasted a three-run homer to right field before
Greyson Shafer hit his fifth home run of the season to bring the Colonels within one. In the ensuing frame, relief pitcher
Tyler Avery retired the Demons in order before
Caston Thompson tied the game with his eighth long ball of the season.
After the teams went scoreless in the seventh, the Demons retook the lead on a single up the middle.
Eli Waters came with the bases loaded and executed a 1-2-3 double play and forced a fly out to end the frame.
In the home half of the eighth, Melancon tied the game at eight with a ground rule double that plated pinch runner
Noah Detillier.
Jaxon Milam scored the go ahead run as
Carter Jenkins worked a five pitch bases loaded walk to put Nicholls up 9-8. Waters retired the side in the ninth with three strikeouts on 10 pitches to secure his first fin of the season.
Nicholls fell behind early as they allowed five runs on three hits, three walks, and one error in the second inning. After leaving one runner stranded in both the first and second innings, Melancon scored from second on a base knock by
Nico Rijo-Berger to put the Colonels on the board in the third.
The Colonels had 11 hits as Melancon, Rijo-Berger, Shafer, and Giger led the way with two apiece. On the mound, Avery produced two hitless frames as he struck out two batters, while
Dawson Richard struck out five batters and allowed two earned runs in 3.1 innings of work.
