STATESBORO, Ga. – The Nicholls State University women's tennis team picked up a 4-1 victory over Jacksonville State on Saturday morning but could not complete the sweep in the second match as the Colonels were defeated 4-0 by Armstrong State.
With the split, the Colonels record stands at 3-6. Nicholls will open Southland Conference play at home on Tuesday, March 1 against McNeese State. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
In the opening match against Jacksonville State, the Colonels put together an outstanding performance as the only point they surrendered was due to not having a player suit up for the No. 6 singles match.
For doubles, Nicholls came out on top in the No. 1 and 2 courts to take a 1-0 lead.

Julia Melendez won at No. 1, 6-2, while
Clemence Krug and
Isla Brock secured the point with a 6-4 win at No. 2.
In singles, Pietersz blanked Oliva Nguyen in the first set at No. 1, 6-0, and took the second, 6-2. Krug won at No. 3, 6-3, 6-3, and Brock was victorious at No. 4 with a 6-3, 6-1 decision.
Against Armstrong State, Nicholls was edged in doubles before ASU won the first two completed matches to earn the team victory.
ASU won No. 3 doubles by default, needing just one more win to take a 1-0 lead. The Colonels were tied at 7-7 on the No. 1 court, but ASU ended doubles play with a 9-7 win at No. 2.
Leading 2-0, Armstrong State, the top ranked team in Division II, won on the No. 2 and 4 courts to earn the shutout win.
