HATTIESBURG, Miss.– The Nicholls State University women's tennis team played two matches on Saturday and were defeated in both, falling to Southern Miss, 4-0, and UTSA, 4-2.
Isla Brock and
Laia Charles led Nicholls (6-13) for the day, winning both of their matches in doubles on the No. 2 court. With the wins, the duo improved to 6-2 on the year.
After coming up short in all three completed singles matches against Southern Miss (14-2), Nicholls captured a pair of victories versus UTSA (9-9).
Julia Melendez came away with a straight-set win over Alena Shichkova at No. 2, winning both sets 6-4, while
Clemence Krug outlasted Lina Hallgren at No. 5, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).
The Colonels had a chance to earn the doubles point against the Roadrunners after Brock and Charles' win split the first two matches. On court 3,
Ambika Pande and Krug put up a fight but were defeated 7-5.
The same scenario happed against Southern Miss as the teams split the No. 1 and 2 courts. Pande and Krug went into extra points at 3 before falling, 7-6 (7-1).
In singles,
Milou Pietersz was the only Colonel to win a set against the Golden Eagles as her match went unfinished on court 1 against Caroline Drescher, 2-6, 6-1.
Nicholls will return home for its next match, taking on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday, March 31. First serve at the Colonel Tennis Complex is scheduled for 11 a.m.
