THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's tennis team received a 2-0 day from
Julia Melendez, but it was not enough to earn the Colonels' first conference win of the season as they were defeated 5-2 by Lamar on Saturday at the Colonel Tennis Complex.
Melenez picked up a dominant 6-0, 6-3 win in singles over Katya Lapayeva on the No. 1 court, and teamed up with
Milou Pietersz for a 6-3 win in the top doubles match. Lamar evened up doubles play with a 6-3 win at No. 3 and went on to take the point as
Isla Brock and
Laia Charles were edged, 7-6, by Lapayeva / Luciana Di Laura.
Lamar went up 2-0 as Di Laura defeated
Andrea Mastrippolito in straight sets at No. 6, but Melendez' win at No. 1 cut the deficit in half. The Colonels then evened up the match as Brock continued her strong play this season with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Talissa Merchiers at No. 4.
Nicholls fell behind 3-2 after Pietersz was defeated in straight sets at No. 2. Needing just one more point to clinch the match, Lamar had to battle back from first set losses at No. 3 and 5 to pick up the win.
Clemence Krug lost her match at 3 against Spengler, 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, and Charles was bested at 5 by Stephanie Marchena, 3-6, 7-6, 7-5.
The Colonels will step out of conference for their next match as they host Western Kentucky on Thursday, March 10 at 2 p.m.
