Colonels Stumble against Stephen F. Austin, 5-2

THIBODAUX, La. – A second consecutive win in doubles for the Nicholls State University women's tennis team was not enough as Stephen F. Austin defeated the Colonels, 5-2, on Sunday at the Colonel Tennis Complex.

Like Saturday against Northwestern State, the Colonels (6-16, 1-8) came out on top in doubles action, winning courts 2 and 3 to take a 1-0 lead. The teams split the first two matches as Clemence Krug and Ambika Pande started things off with a 6-3 win at 3. SFA evened it up with a 6-3 win on court 1, but Isla Brock and Laia Charles went on to earn their seventh consecutive win in doubles with a close 7-5 victory.

SFA (11-8, 5-4) won the first set in four of the six singles matches and took the lead after winning courts 6 and 2. Julia Meledez was defeated in straight sets by Dhanielly Quevedo, and Andrea Mastrippolito dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision at 6 against Liza Aginskaya.

Brock tied the match at 2-2 after winning in straight sets over Valeria Terentyeva, 6-4, 6-1, on court 3. The final three singles matches lasted three sets, with Nicholls managing comebacks on courts 1 and 4. Milou Pieters bounced back from a first set loss against Denise Maxl, but fell in three sets on court 1. Charles earned a shutout in her second set, but dropped the first and third sets, 6-4, as SFA secure the victory.

In the final match, Krug could not hang on against Vanesa Calvo Pardo on court 5 as she was defeated 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.

The Colonels will host rival New Orleans on Friday, April 8 in Houma at Renaissance Family Fitness in part of a women's / men's doubleheader against the Privateers. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
