HOUMA, La.  – Playing in its final home match, the Nicholls State University women's tennis team was defeated by New Orleans, 6-1, on Friday afternoon at Renaissance Family Fitness in Houma.
 
Milou Pietersz was the only Colonel to earn a point in the loss as she won in three sets at No. 2 against Soledad Calderon. Isla Brock and Laia Charles were en route to another conference win in doubles, but the match was suspended after New Orleans (13-4, 6-3) took matches 2 and 3 for the point.
 
Leading 1-0, the Privateers quickly clinched the team victory by winning courts 3, 4 and 1 in singles. Brock, the lone senior on the roster for Nicholls (6-17, 1-9), closed out her home career with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 loss at No. 3. Charles fell at No. 4, 6-4, 6-1, while Melendez was defeated at 1, 6-1, 7-5.
 
Pietersz put Nicholls on the board with a comeback three-set win. After dropping the first to Calderon, 1-6, Pietersz came back to win the next two, 6-4, 7-5. But the final two matches went in favor of the visitors as Clemence Krug fell 6-3, 6-0, and Andrea Mastrippolito was defeated 6-1, 7-6 (8-6).
 
Nicholls will wrap up the season on Sunday at Southeastern Louisiana. First serve in Hammond is scheduled for 1 p.m.
