THIBODAUX, La. –
Lingfeng Gu capped her freshman campaign with a victory on the No. 1 court against McNeese, but it would be the only point for the Nicholls State University women's tennis team in its 6-1 loss Saturday to close out the 2017 season.
Gu needed three sets to earn her seventh singles victory as she outlasted Giovanna Fioretti, 6-1, 3-6, 10-8. Along with finishing 7-10 in her inaugural campaign, the win was her second in league play.
McNeese won the first four matches in singles in straight sets before Gu broke the streak.
Mariia Kozachok won her second set 7-5 after falling in the first by the same score, but was outlasted in the tiebreaker, 10-8.
In doubles play, McNeese (12-10, 7-4 SLC) won the No. 1 and 2 courts in order, 6-4.
Ambika Pande, who was honored before the match for Senior Day, and
Andrea Mastrippolito were ahead on the No. 3 court, 5-4, before play was suspended.
The Colonels finished the 2017 season with a 6-11 record and a 1-10 mark in league play.
