OXFORD, Miss. – The Nicholls State University women's tennis team saw its second weekend of action for the fall in the ITA Southern Regionals, and once again, sophomore
Marina Vigil led the Colonels by recording a victory in singles.
Vigil won all three of her singles matches in the Scramble on the Bayou a month ago and carried that momentum into this weekend with a 6-4, 6-2 win in Draw 2 over Louisiana-Lafayette's Marina Rodriguez Garcia. Vigil moved on to face Southern Miss' Katie De La Gorza in the single-elimination bracket and bounced back from a shutout before falling 6-0, 7-5.
Stephanie Barnett and
Lingfeng Gu both competed in the double-elimination Draw 1 bracket and were dropped in both matches. Barnett had a close 7-5, 7-5 loss to Auburn's Taylor Russo and fell in straight sets to Tulane's Ivone Alvaro. Gu was defeated in straight sets as well.
Rounding out the singles action was
Mariia Kozachok, who lost her lone match against Northwestern State.
In doubles play, Barnett and Vigil were edged by Tulane's Elena Muller/Alvaro, 8-7 (6) before being eliminated by Alabama's Kimberley Gintrand/Jacqueline Pelletier. In the bottom half of the bracket, Gu and Kozachok fell to South Alabama and Southern Miss, 8-3 and 8-5, respectively.
UP NEXT
Both Colonel tennis programs will compete in the West Florida Invitational next weekend in Pensacola, beginning Friday (Oct. 19).
