HAMMOND, La. – The Nicholls State University women's tennis team closed out its fall schedule with a fourth-place finish in the George E. Fourmaux Fed Cup Invitational, hosted by Southeastern Louisiana.
West Florida, which the Colonels competed against last weekend, took first while Southland members McNeese and Lamar finished at second and third. Nicholls went 2-1 in pool play with a 3-2 victory over North Alabama and a 4-1 win over the hos Lady Lions. The Colonels fell to McNeese, 4-1, and dropped the third-place match against Lamar, 5-0.
"I was pleased in terms of us being able to test the waters by changing lineups and seeing what can work for us," said Nicholls head coach Greg Harkins. "Everyone in the lineup contributed, but at the same time, we found out some areas we want improve if we want to push to be top third in the conference and challenge for championships. We're not going to settle for where we are and we're going to keep pushing and improving."
In the opening match Friday against North Alabama, Nicholls for itself in a battle as all five points were decided in super tiebreakers. The Colonels were down 1-2 before climbing back and Antonia Roessli clinched the win with a 10-5 victory in the final set.
On Saturday, Roessli and Lingfeng Gu won singles matches in straight sets. Stephanie Barnett/Daphne Haverkamp claimed a win in doubles and Mariia Kozachok edged out her opponent by two points in the third set.
The final match in pool play put Nicholls against one of the top teams in the Southland, McNeese. The Cowgirls swept singles, but Barnett and Haverkamp won their sets in doubles, 6-3, for the lone point.
In Sunday's third-place match, the Colonels were shutout against Lamar. Barnett was edged in three sets while Roessli and Marina Vigil fell in the supertiebreaker in the doubles match, 10-8.
The Colonels return to action after the New Year. The full spring schedule will be released at a later date. For the latest news on the women's tennis, follow the team on Twitter @Nicholls_WTEN.
