MATCH RESULTS
THIBODAUX, La. – Facing a 3-0 deficit, the Nicholls State University women's tennis team clawed back to tie the match against UIW, but the Cardinals took the final court to escape with a 4-3 victory over the Colonels Sunday afternoon at the Colonel Tennis Complex.
UIW (4-13, 2-4 SLC) took the doubles point after winning on the top court and at No. 2 via a forfeit. The visitors then reeled off two wins in singles to go up 3-0.
Marina Vigil won in straight sets before
Anastasia Kuzevanova, and
Stephanie Barnett edged their opponents in three-set battles. But on court 6,
Changwei Wei forced a third set but would fall to Rachel Sadiq, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
"I'm proud of how we battled today after falling behind early," said
Greg Harkins, Nicholls tennis head coach. "We lost a point due to an illness, but our women kept at it and made a match out of it. We just came up a bit short, but we'll learn from this and continue to improve."
UIW went up 2-0 after
Mariia Kozachok was forced to retire in singles on Court 3. The Cardinals followed with a shutout victory at No. 2 by Jelena Dordan.
Vigil kept Nicholls (8-7, 1-5 SLC) alive with a 7-6 (0), 6-2 win at No. 4 against Sara Djurdjevic. Kuzevanova dropped her first set before taking the next two, 6-2. On the top court, Barnett and Matea Zemunik were all tied at 5-5 before Barnett broke serve to go up one. She then closed it out for a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 victory, improving to 11-3 on the year.
