NEW ORLEANS – The Nicholls State University women's and men's tennis programs wrapped up their opening weekend of the fall season in the Scramble on the Bayou, hosted by the University of New Orleans.
 
Both teams square off in doubles and singles in a round robin against New Orleans, Prairie View A&M, and Jackson State. Both sides recorded seven points against PVAMU and one versus UNO. The women won six matches against JSU, while the men came out on top in four.
 
"It was a good weekend," said Greg Harkins, Nicholls tennis head coach. "Good conditioning paid off for us going the distance; we had a great mental positive attitude out there and good team building. But we also know we need to improve to compete come spring against the Southland Conference."
 
Marina Vigil led the women's team with a perfect weekend, going 3-0 in singles and won all three doubles matches as well. She was the lone Colonel to win a point against New Orleans as she earned a close 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) victory, and she also teamed up with Stephanie Barnett for a win at No. 1 doubles and won her others at No. 2.
 
For the men's team, Alvaro Barranco Vilaltella and Tobias Lentz each claimed a pair of singles wins. Vilaltella won against New Orleans and Prairie View, while Lentz notched victories against Prairie View and Jackson State.
 
The men return to the courts on Sept. 28 at the Rice Invitational in Houston, while the women are back at it on Oct. 12 for the ITA Regionals at Ole Miss.
