MATCH RESULTS
THIBODAUX, La. — With rain in the forecast, the Nicholls State University women's tennis team had just enough time to pick up its third win as the Colonels defeated Loyola University New Orleans, 5-0, Saturday afternoon at the Colonel Tennis Complex. The men were scheduled to play the Wolf Pack as well, but the match was postponed due to rain.
Nicholls (3-0) swept doubles after allowing just three points and went on to win all the completed singles matches in straight sets. Courts 1 and 3 finished at the same time, clinching the 5-0 victory for the home team.
"I'm glad we were able to get one of our matches in today," said
Greg Harkins, Nicholls tennis head coach. "The women's team did what they needed to do to secure the victory against a solid Loyola team. We started strong in doubles, and that momentum continued into singles play."
Mariia Kozachok and
Marina Vigil pitched a shutout at No. 2 doubles, while
Stephanie Barnett/
Lingfeng Gu and Changwei/
Anastasia Kuzevanova won their matches, 6-2 and 6-1, respectively.
In singles play, Kuzevanova had the strongest showing at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Margaret Adams. Kozachok also had a shutout in one of her sets at No. 3. Wei took both of her sets, 6-2, while Barnett secured a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 1 line against Koral Martinez.
Loyola's Manuela Alban led on the No. 2 court when play was suspended, while Vigil was up at No. 4.
