THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's tennis team impressively started its three-match home stand with a 7-0 victory Wednesday over Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville at the Colonel Tennis Complex.
Nicholls (7-3) needed only 30 minutes to claim the doubles point, winning on courts 2 and 3 for a 1-0 advantage. In singles, five of the six victories were in straight sets.
"It was a terrific showing by our women today," Nicholls tennis head coach
Greg Harkins said. "It was our seventh win of the season and should give us some confidence heading into a big weekend at home against two tough conference opponents."
The bottom half of the lineup secured the team victory over SIUE (0-10) as the trio of
Marina Vigil,
Changwei Wei and
Anastasia Kuzevanova allowed just a combined two points in their six sets. Wei had a shutout on the No. 5 court to snap a four-match skid.
Wei also had a shutout in No. 3 doubles, teaming up with Kuzevanova for a 6-0 win.
Mariia Kozachok and Vigil clinched the point with a 6-2 victory.
Although
Stephanie Barnett and
Lingfeng Gu's doubles' match went unfinished, both earned wins in singles. The 6-2, 6-3 win over Lara Tupper was Barnett's fourth consecutive win at the No. 1 line, and Gu's win gave her back-to-back. Kozachok fought back from a close first-set loss and edged Raillane Kamdem at No. 4, 6-7 (3-10), 6-2, 10-7.
